Empowering children to heal from childhood trauma and abuse
Kids Kamp is for young people who are courageous enough to be prepared to look at and heal from their childhood abuse or trauma. Specifically for
- 8 -11 years: mixed (at primary school)
Heal For Life provides a 5-day residential camp for kids whose lives have been impacted by the effects of trauma or abuse. Symptoms include disruptive (and/or aggressive) behaviour at school, childhood depression, anxiety, learning difficulties, problems remembering or concentrating. In this age group self harm or thoughts of suicide can occur as well as extreme dependence or excessive compliance.
In addition to the 5 day camps with a group of kids, we can run individual healing days or week long programs for those with very specific needs. These are more expensive and we are happy to help out if that is what you need. We particularly welcome foster kids.
About the camps
Heal For Life is a place where kids find support and understanding. Here, you will spend the week with other children who have survived similar experiences to you and have also decided it’s time to change. It is for those who want to behave differently and want help to find out how to change.
Heal For Life is designed to be the safe, welcoming home every child deserves. The main building is large and spacious with an open verandah. In the guests’ living space, there is a common sitting room, shared kitchen, dining area, lounge room and laundry; 4 double bedrooms and 3 bathrooms all situated on 120 acres of beautiful bush land. Without mobile phones, TV or computer games, you are able to spend the whole week focusing inward. The meals are prepared by our wonderful volunteers and cleaning is shared, while other tasks are performed as a part of Labour of Love (helping out in and around the home for an hour or so each day).
During your stay at Heal For Life you will be encouraged to feel your feelings, to let yourself express the emotions that haven’t been safe to feel that are impacting on your happiness and behavior now. You will learn about self-esteem, coping mechanisms, overcoming depression and anxiety, healthy relationships and boundaries. During free time you will enjoy playing outside and, if it’s warm enough, you can swim in our large dam.
This is the opposite of a “boot camp” they talk about on TV, this is a place where you will be loved and supported by those of us who had difficulties in childhood too . We will help you release some of your anger and fear and start a new way of looking at and being in life.
Supervision is provided 24 hours a day by trained peer support volunteers and they are assisted by a qualified and experienced child counsellor.
Parents and caregivers are active participants in all Heal For Life children and youth programs. We encourage parents to clearly explain the purpose of the healing week with their child prior to arrival; to attend a Parent Information Session on the first day of camp, and also importantly, join their child for a workshop on the last day of camp.
Young people need to be encouraged to recognise their behavior is not because they are bad, naughty or weak but their behavior and mental state is a result of the trauma or abuse they suffered. This takes the blame away and empowers the young person to change.
We believe that no young person wants to behave badly, however, it happens because of their unexpressed fear and anger stemming from the trauma and abuse.
We welcome all young people who wish to heal and ask both parents and children to understand the importance of safety at our healing program. Children need to be aware this is not a holiday camp; they are coming to change their lives by changing their behaviour.
Very occasionally children, who are unable to live and work safely with other children and adults, are lovingly asked to leave the program and are invited to return as soon as they are ready.
