The Heal for Life Adult Program is a 5-day residential program designed to help you heal from childhood trauma and/or abuse. The program is run in groups with a maximum number of twelve (12) people, however, all of our work is done independently and we do not share stories of what happened to us with the group.
Our programs are unique because they are run by trained survivors of childhood trauma for survivors of childhood trauma. Each of the extensively trained peer support volunteers (PSVs) and facilitators have experienced childhood trauma and/or abuse and want to help you on your healing journey. They truly understand the effects it has had on your life. You may be experiencing (or have experienced) one or several of these symptoms as a result of childhood trauma/abuse:
- Poor sleep (hard to go to or stay asleep, hard to wake up) wanting to sleep too much, nightmares
- Anxiety, depression
- Feelings of guilt, self-blame, shame
- Addictions – alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, workaholism, excessive spending, people pleasing, perfectionism, obsessive and compulsive behaviours
- Flashbacks, fearfulness, panic attacks
- Feeling unsafe at night
- Low self-esteem
- Disconnection, co-dependency or other dysfunction in relationships
- Spontaneous crying, despair and hopelessness
- Irritability, anger and resentment
- Emotional numbness
- Self-destructive and/or impulsive behavior
- Decreased ability to concentrate, memory lapses, difficulty making decisions, feeling overwhelmed
- Self harm and/or eating disorders
- Avoiding situations/things that remind you of the trauma/abuse
- Risky behaviours, trouble with the law
There are many forms of childhood trauma and abuse which impact equally on the development of the brain. Traumatic events include abandonment or forced separation from a primary caregiver, neglect, death of a parent or sibling, abuse including emotional, sexual, physical, spiritual and satanic ritual, domestic violence and serious childhood illness/accident. The purpose of the Healing Week program is to provide a safe environment to help you get in touch with, and heal, your inner self – the part of you that is carrying the impact of the trauma you survived. Our main focus is teaching you valuable tools that will help you to heal from traumatic events in childhood; events that you may or may not currently remember. Once you’ve learnt and practiced using the tools during your healing week you can take them home with you to continue helping and empowering yourself.
Our highly successful program has been developed by combining the latest scientific research on the effects of trauma on the brain with intuitive knowledge gathered from many survivors of child abuse over time. We share with you what we know and support you to heal.
It is not important to have any prior knowledge about healing from childhood trauma in order to benefit from our program. It’s designed to be one of self-discovery and you’ll be encouraged to trust in your own wisdom and do what is right for you.
Many survivors of child abuse experience a sense of freedom and empowerment when they discover they know intuitively what they need to do in order to heal. You may also come to a deeper understanding, appreciation and love of yourself through the validation, understanding and acknowledgment of the group. This may be a very new experience for you. Participating in a loving community also helps build your self-esteem, self-respect and often provides a renewed feeling of self-worth.
We’ve discovered the program works best when you are doing it for you and no one else. How much you achieve from a healing week will depend on how much you engage with the activities and workshops and how much you are willing to put into it.
On Sunday you will meet the other guests and peer support team and be shown around so you become familiar with the retreat. The group will share dinner together, get to know each other, discuss what to expect from the Healing Week and discuss what each person needs in order to feel safe during the week.
Here is an example of the daily schedule:
|8:30 am||Reflections (a time for spiritual exploration and reflection)|
|9:30 am||Labour of Love (Time to give back to the community through work. You will be encouraged to do what fits your feelings, not what you think you should do!)|

|1:00 pm||Lunch (prepared by 2 or 3 guests and a carer during Labour of Love)|

During my stay at ‘Heal For Life’, I found the staff and carers were supportive, empathetic and non-judgemental and with a high level of training in the latest methods of helping people heal after trauma.
